Scratch and Sniff Labels

Custom Printed Retail Labels

Scratch-and-sniff labels are available in a wide range of sizes and shapes to fit your exact needs.

They instantly boost product awareness and give customers a true sneak peek of the scent inside—right at the shelf or in the mail. When a shopper can interact with your packaging, your product earns more attention and moves closer to purchase.

Alpine's expert label engineers will help you create custom scratch and sniff labels that make your scented products stand out from the competition.

How Scratch & Sniff Labels Work

We produce your scratch-and-sniff labels on our flexographic presses for a clean, smooth finish and consistent color. The aroma comes from microencapsulated fragrance—which can include essential oil–based blends—suspended in a specialized water-based or UV-curable coating. During printing, we apply the layer to the activation area and cure it, ensuring the microcapsules remain intact. When a consumer lightly scratches the patch, the capsules break, releasing the scent at the perfect moment.

Microencapsulation protects delicate fragrance compounds, reduces premature evaporation, and preserves scent until the end user activates it. This approach also helps maintain a longer shelf life compared to unencapsulated oils.

Popular Uses & Industries

Scratch and sniff labels are a natural fit anywhere scent influences purchasing decisions. They're commonly used for air fresheners—for homes, cars, and boats—so shoppers can compare scents before buying. They also shine in candles and wax melts, where a quick scratch communicates the fragrance profile better than any description on the box. Personal-care products such as soaps, shampoos, lotions, and perfumes benefit as well, because consumers can preview notes like citrus, vanilla, or lavender.

Beyond primary packaging, scratch and sniff labels excel in promotional print—postcards, sample cards, shelf talkers, and event handouts—where a scented patch increases engagement and recall. For household and cleaning products, an on-pack scratch area helps demonstrate 'fresh' or 'clean' notes and guides shoppers to the variant they prefer.

Design & Production Options

You can specify virtually any size or shape for your scratch-and-sniff labels. Custom dies enable us to produce a variety of shapes, including circles, ovals, and rectangles, with circles being especially popular for targeted 'scratch here' zones. We offer premium papers and films for base label construction. Paper is typically used for the scented patch itself, while films excel in durability for non-scented areas and overall label strength.

Our flexographic presses handle CMYK and spot colors. Labels can be supplied die-cut or butt-cut, on rolls, or sheets to support both hand application and automated equipment.

Adhesive selection is tailored to your container and environment. Options include permanent, removable, freezer-grade, and specialty adhesives that perform on glass, PET, HDPE, coated cartons, and more—on dry, humid, or cold-chain lines. Our label engineers balance adhesive, size, shape, die line, and application method so your scratch-and-sniff labels perform beautifully from press to point-of-sale.

Practical Tips for Scratch and Sniff Label Best Results

Place with purpose. Position the activation zone where it's easy to reach but protected from constant abrasion during shipping and shelf stocking. This helps preserve scent life.

Store smart. Keep finished labels sealed, cool, and dry before application to reduce premature capsule rupture. With proper handling and the right formula, scent life typically ranges from several months to a year or more.

Mind compliance. Use IFRA-compliant fragrances and note that scratch-and-sniff coatings are not intended for direct food contact. If your mailers or products target children, let us know so we can advise on suitable formulations.

Types of Scents You Can Encapsulate (Including CBD & Terpenes)

Scratch and sniff labels support a wide variety of aromatic materials:

  • Essential oil–based blends (e.g., lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree) provide natural profiles and pair well with wellness, beauty, and home-care brands.
  • Fragrance oils and aroma chemicals allow precise duplication of complex accords—think bakery vanilla, roasted coffee, ocean breeze, or laundry-fresh—while maintaining batch-to-batch consistency.
  • Botanical extracts and natural isolates (such as citrus fractions or vanilla absolute) can highlight premium or 'clean' brand stories.
  • Hemp-derived profiles (CBD/terpenes) can be captured via THC-free terpene blends or fragrances inspired by hemp botanicals. If you plan to use CBD-related aromas, we'll help you evaluate formulation, labeling language, and distribution considerations. Hence, your scratch-and-sniff labels align with your brand, carrier policies for mailers, and applicable regulations.
  • Seasonal and limited-edition notes—apple spice, pine, pumpkin, tropicals—create timely campaigns and collectible packaging.

FAQs About Scratch and Sniff Labels

Can we use pure essential oils?
We recommend microencapsulated fragrances, which can include essential oil–based inputs. Pure, unencapsulated oils don't handle well on-press and won't deliver a controlled, long-lasting release, therefore, we are not capable of creating unencapsulated oils.

Will a laminate block the scent?
Yes—if it covers the scented area.

Are these safe for kids' products or mailers?

We use coatings and fragrances intended for print applications. If your project involves children's items or large-scale mailings, we recommend keeping the labels away from children.

What applications work best?
Paper or film constructions where the scented zone remains exposed (no film or laminate over the patch).
